What's on at the movies Oct 13 2016?
Some good films this week. I'm preparing to launch my latest book The Troubles Keeper. I did have an expected release date of the 14th October. However I've pushed that back another week because I'm still going through final edits. This book has received such amazing reviews on Good Reads that I want the final product to be as polished as possible. So far it has over 65 ratings with a score of 4.35 out of 5. So I'm thrilled and very proud of this novel.

Inferno ✪✪✪ ½ Opened October 13
I read Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. Let me rephrase that. Like most readers of these books, I inhaled them. Nothing was important enough to interrupt until you'd finished.
The first two films in the trilogy of the same name (2006 & 2009), directed by Ron Howard, who also directed this one, were a bit of a letdown. However, because the suspense is based on the character's solving a puzzle mystery it was hard to tell if knowing the outcome dampened the enjoyment of the film.
This book I hadn't read. The word in reading circles was that it wasn't great, and so I didn't seek it out. I found this film much more entertaining than its predecessors. But I'm not sure if its because I didn't know where they were going. Although I have read a few reviews since, which have also said it was the best of the trilogy.
All actors are solid and the Italian and various international settings are just glorious. If you've been to Italy, you will no doubt lean to your fellow film goer (hopefully, you know them) and whisper, "I've been there."
Great action film with just a couple of slow, unnecessary scenes that most likely appear to remain a little truer to the novel. Note: Tom Hanks has been very busy this year with three releases so far (Sully, Hologram for a King).

Deepwater Horizon ✪✪✪✪ Opened October 6
Directed by Peter Berg (Battleship, Friday Night Lights, Hancock) who also directed Mark Wahlberg in Lone Survivor is becoming well known for his action films. He even makes a cameo in the opening scenes.
Wow! When the sh*&^%$ hits the fan on an oil rig, it doesn't just hit, it cascades into something hugely horrific. Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, semi-submersible offshore drilling rig owned by Transocean. On April 21, 2010 they experienced a blowout, which is basically a build up of pressure in the pipes they are drilling down through. The subsequent, possibly avoidable explosion killed 11 crewmen. The fireball was visible 64km away. These type of fires, as we have seen in Kuwait, are near impossible to extinguish. The Horizon sank and the well gushed oil until it was capped on the 15th July, months later. It became the largest oil spill in US waters.
This is a riveting action drama led capably by everyman actor Mark Wahlberg. He really can play most parts so well. Kurt Russell is the rig manager and he's also convincing. I love that he's back in the mix with films. He's been a favorite of mine since childhood. John Malkovich as the company representative who cares more about the money than listening to engineers is compelling too.
A fascinating, terrifying film made all the more frightening as it is based on real events. I've learned that when you land on an oil rig do check if they've done adequate pressure testing. If not, get off immediately.
